Why Tottenham Must Keep Captain Son Heung-min

One of the biggest reasons why Tottenham must keep their captain, Son Heung-min (32), is because he is a player the fans adore.

On July 3rd (Korean time), British outlet Spurs Web reported, "Tottenham is set to trigger the option to extend Son Heung-min's contract by one more season," noting that "Tottenham is entering the final year of the four-year contract signed in 2021." Son's contract currently runs until 2025.

There have been various speculations about Son's future, including a long-term contract or a two-year renewal. However, Tottenham has indicated that they will first activate the one-year extension option included in Son's contract. This is likely to resolve the issue of Son's contract renewal this summer. Previously, Football Insider also reported that "Tottenham will activate Son's one-year contract extension option."

By doing so, Tottenham can secure Son Heung-min, keeping him for an additional two years until 2026, thereby warding off interest from other clubs. Last summer, Son received a significant offer from the Saudi Arabian league, among other suitors. With only one year remaining on his contract this summer, interest in acquiring him could have been more aggressive than ever, but the extension option prevents this.

Additionally, this move eliminates the worry that Son could leave the team as a free agent (FA) next summer without a transfer fee.

Spurs Web noted, "Last year, Harry Kane (now with Bayern Munich) left, and despite the arrival of the relatively unknown manager Ange Postecoglou, Son showed his loyalty by staying at Tottenham and was subsequently appointed captain. Extending Son's contract is a no-brainer for Tottenham," adding, "Considering Son's popularity, losing him for free would cause significant outrage."

Furthermore, the outlet praised Son, saying, "Even if Son doesn't make the starting eleven every week as he ages, his natural attitude and professionalism will still make him an invaluable asset to Tottenham."
